All Hail Alvaro (Argentinos 4 - Newell’s 0)
By: Scott | September 24th, 2007Alvaro Pereira, who has been consistently lauded in this blog for his pace, imagination, effort, and overall soccer ability. Overall, those things have been lacking in this Argentinos squad, especially item #4. This past Saturday night was his official coronation, scoring three goals in a 4-0 shellacking of Newell’s Old Boys.
Newell’s, who won the Argentine championship as recently as May 2004, came in to the match during what would be called a “bad moment.” The week before they had lost the derby of Rosario to an equally bad Rosario Central, which led to threats made from the fans and the resigning of the coach. So, a bit of badness and chaos accompanied the boys from Rosario.
Argentinos came out strong from the start. Cabrera finally lived up to the high soccer standard set by his extreme soccer hair and generated some movement along the right. Pereira was doing his thing along the left. Gabriel Hauche was lively and obnoxious to all those who tried to get in his way. It was just this persistence that led to the first goal. Cabrera fired a shot that was saved and rebounded, Delorte kept it alive by lumbering his enormous and slow body to the ground, moving the ball, and then Hacuhe came back to find a way to kick the ball into the upper part of the net. Ugly, but beautiful. 1-0
Then the Pereira show started. No one from Newell’s seemed that interested in running any distance, so the future star of the Uruguyan national team filled spaces and found spots to put pressure on the keeper and lodge two goals, one before and one after the halftime break. Then came the fourth goal…one for the grandkids. Ortigoza made a pretty impressive run down the middle (again) and laid it off to an immobile Pereira…I would describe it, but wait for it in the video below and you’ll see how beautiful it is.
More to come tomorrow or Wednesday. Until then, enjoy the magic of Alvaro…and the summary from the Boca match two months ago and the hope that was Alejandro Delorte.

Nice post Scott, too bad I can’t watch videos at work. Good pictures though.

Indeed, Scott. Great post (I was there with you, literally). I hope you’ll tackle the Navarro red card roll. You’re covering the matches better than La Nacion and Ole combined. In fact, you should publish your own report card of the match.

There is so much to touch on this week–the Navarro booking, the halfway mark of the tournament (I can’t call it a season), the apotheosis of Pereira–that I will be posting every day. By “literally”, does that by any chance mean that you are a match attender?

You bet. I am a match attender, and, again, great blog. I can’t tell you how nice it is to have someone dissecting the matches in English.

Randy, frankly I am astonished that there are more. Shouldn’t we coordinate and view the matches together?

Perhaps as astonished as I was to find an AAAJ site I could understand (mi castellano is that of a 16-month old baby). Wife permitting, I’d really like to go to baja Flores Sunday, but I’m a virgin to that area. You going?

The plan as of now is yes. Your attendance would make it 3 married men plus one engaged guy on their way to El Nuevo Gasómetro…sounds like a bad movie setup to me…

Randy, We are all going to San Lorenzo’s stadium on Sunday, you are more than welcome to join us. No worries, I am a regular over there. Where do you live? We would have to buy tickets beforehand.

Yeah, I am sure there is room in *the car*, right?

Wife gave me the green light, so count me in on the B-movie. I live a block off Santa Fe between Arenales and Uriburu. How do we get there?

Send me an email to argentinos[at]theoffside[dot]com…I am pretty sure it will get to me.
