Back on the victory horse

First post, let’s make this short and easy to read. I’m also a fan of Argentinos, the kind that goes to the stadium almost every single time. I’m helping Scott with this blog and the idea is to maintain everyone informed about this club.
You need to understand that Argentinos Junios is not a big club here; it is one of the small ones, something like West Ham in England, Fiorentina in Italy or Español in Spain. But the main difference is that Argentinos once won the Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League) in 1985 and we had some amazing young players make their debut throughout the years, including Diego Armando Maradona.
Having said this, on Saturday, Argentinos played Colon. It was a match that, on paper, could be won. But having lost the last couple of matches, our coach quit in the middle of the week and nobody taking care of the team in the meantime, it also could have been lost.
The team looked good in the beginning, having shots on target and controlling the ball and the match. On one of those plays that can not be explained, Colon’s goalkeeper hit Hauche and a penalty kick was given to our team. When we heard the whistle, we were really happy. But as soon as we saw Nestor Ortigoza grab the ball, we started shaking. This player Scott mentioned several times and one of the ones that shouldn’t be playing or even let out of his house unless it was to go to the freak show, was going to kick it. Amazingly enough, he made it and scored for the first time in his career in an official match.
The second goal was even stranger. A long ball in the air from Argentino’s defense was headed back by one of Colon’s defenders to the keeper so he could easily pick it up; except it caught the keeper standing somewhere else and the ball crawled up to the net. It had the same pace as a Gus Van Sant movie, yet managed to make its way to the net. There were no Argentinos players involved or even near the scene. Unbelievable.
At this point, our team had to maintain the score and that is exactly what they did. Nothing much happened, after that, just a few shots from the outside by Colon. One of those was a goal, an impressive one, but only 30 seconds before the match ended. So it was 2 -1 and 3 points that mean a lot to our team.
Lets hope we an continue this with out next coach, former playmaker extraordinaire, Pipo Gorosito.

My first comment is that Argentinos wishes it was as “big” right now as Fiorentina, West Ham, or Espanyol (what is the correct spelling?). For me, the correct corresponding clubs would be more like Fulham, Sampdoria, and Mallorca: just good enough to stay up, but with small hopes of making a lot of noise.
The consistent production of world-class players through the youth system is quite important. And it doesn’t stop at Maradona. In fact, it should be its own post.

The youth system will be a post of its own, soon. Some of the best players you’ve seen around the world started their careers in Argentinos.

Do they play in Buenos Aires or elsewhere?
