Caruso Lombardi Has Quit
By: Scott | August 31st, 2007“What’s that? The fans are unhappy? What should I do?”
Let me say first that I wish Ricardo Caruso Lombardi all the best in this life. I hope his health improves and he lives a long and happy life.
Today he quit, citing a serious health concern as the reason. I have often joked that it would take a sick, sick man to continue to play Ortigoza every match…I didn’t mean it.
Upon arrival last January, he immediately brought a new, tougher attitude that showed up on the field and in the results table. In 24 matches during the reign of King Caruso, Argentinos Juniors won 8 matches, drew 8 and lost 8. Pretty incredible, eh? That totals 32 points in 24 matches, for an average of 1.33 points per match. Which is, on one hand, extremely average and, on the other, better than his predecessors. Under his leadership, Argentinos escaped the relegation playoffs for the first time in six years. His replacement will be Nestor Gorosito. I must say that I am ignorant on all things related to Sr. Gorosito. Opinions will be shared as soon as I can come up with them.
Hopefully, Sr. Gorosito can remove Ortigoza. Perhaps our so fallible defensive midfielder had compromising pictures of Caruso or was even his illegitimate child, which are the only acceptable explanations for his continued presence on the field. Sr. Gorosito should be able to see that Gonzalo Prósperi is a more than adequate replacement.
If Sr. Gorosito can actuate a right winger out of thin air, then he will indeed be a hero. As mentioned in the last post, Martin Cabrera certainly looked like he could fill a role there, mostly due to a pretty head of soccer hair. Nothing would be lost by putting him there, preferrably with Pablo Barzola in the right back position. He looked good (again) against Huracán..good in entirely relative terms, of course.
My ideal lineup, then, would be: Navarro; Escudero, Sabia, Scotti, Barzola; Cabrera, Prósperi, Battión, Pereira; Hauché, Delorte.
No combination of players on the current roster will scare an opposing team with their talent, so these players offer a combination of tenacity, speed, and intelligence to get the job done.
The next match is tomorrow, Saturday September 1 against Colón de Santa Fe. For those not in the know, they are not good. Which, at this point does not mean much in terms of how the two teams will match up…come back on Monday to learn how things turned out.
